I live in a city in China where the only dog food they sell is Pedigree and Purina.. I don’t like all the “animal by-products” they use and find my dog was scratching alot from this food.

I’ve looked up a million recipes online for home-made dog food and found them all to be soo different and just contradict another. There are no special additives I can buy here for supplements.. so here is what I have been making him:

Red/green/yellow peppers
carrots
broccoli
Tomatos
Sometimes cauliflower,celery/bok choi
little garlic for flavour
chicken breasts/chicken heart/liver/pork breast/ground pork/ground beef (I alternate meat every week)
1 raw egg + egg shell once every two days
a few tablespoons of milk once a day

I boil the veggies and meat together, kind of like a soup.

is my dog getting a proper diet? Should I not be cooking the veggies? I find he digests them better cooked…
Any additional info would be great thanks!
Hanson- BLINDNESS??? Why would you even say that ?

Everyone else- is it possible to over feed on the protein? What if I were to give more meat then veggies?

The speed at which a puppy puts on weight varies depending upon the breed of dog and whether or not it receives enough exercise or food. There are general puppy weight estimates you can use as a guideline for raising your puppy, however if you suspect that your puppy is either over or underweight, talk to your vet for a confirmation.

You can check out many different websites that have information on your specific breed of dog and how much he or she should weigh. Many sites publish a puppy weight chart you can use as a general guide. The weight of the dog is all determined on the age and size of the dog. If you have a large breed dog, you might notice their weight and growth to be fast. They should be getting the right amount of weight by a certain age, because for one bigger dogs eat more.

Many sites will publish a separate chart for each dog breed, or you can ask your vet for a puppy growth rate guide. If you are at all unsure whether your puppy is a safe weight, simply pop into the vet’s office for a check-up. If anything is wrong, your vet will be able to advise you of the proper foods your puppy should be receiving, and in some cases recommend a diet food brand or issue a nutrition supplement for under-nourished puppies.

Understanding the physical expectancies of your dog’s breed is the first step in preparing yourself for adequately meeting his needs, not to mention you’ll have a better idea of what to expect in terms of dog growth rate. It’s safe to say that smaller dogs will usually be fully grown around their first birthday, whereas larger dogs, like the Bernese mountain dog, can take 18 – 24 months to reach their full adult size.

To learn more about puppy growth and how to keep them on track with their right growth path, you should check out information for your breed of dog. The puppy one won’t be a puppy for long and he or she needs your help to get to the size you want them to be. The one thing to remember about puppy growth is all dogs are different and different breeds need more than others.

Anemia can be caused by excessive loss of red blood cells or by inadequate production.

Nutritional iron-deficiency anemia, common in people, is uncommon in dogs with today’s commercially balanced dog foods. Chronic iron deficiency, as described by the “Dog Owner’s Home Veterinary Handbook,” is a clear indication that an insidious loss of blood is taking place.

Blood loss is a condition that is commonly caused by wounds or parasites such as worms and fleas. Symptoms of anemia in dogs include white or pale gums, weakness, and a fast pulse. Sometimes this condition indicates a more serious illness such as toxicity that results from a drug exposure. However, the more simple and common cause of anemia which is blood loss can be easily treated with a view toward promoting the growth of new red blood cells.

You need to give your dog a special diet rich in iron, protein, and vitamin B12. The following lists of foods and supplements are especially helpful and provide the necessary nutrients that your dog needs to treat anemia.

1. Beef liver which contains iron, protein, B complex, and B12.
2. Kelp powder which contains iodine and other trace minerals.
3. Green vegetables which contains iron and other minerals.
4. Nutritional yeast along with B12 which offers the same benefits as the liver.
5. Vitamin C, from 500 to 2,000 milligrams per day (depending on the dog’s size) which helps with the absorption of iron from the intestinal tract.

If the condition is caused by parasites, then you will need to nip the problem in the bud and treat the parasite infestation first before using any other forms of treatment.

Using a many commercially available flea treatments such as shampoos and sprays can prove effective in killing fleas. But start by combing or brushing your dog on a white sheet or blanket so you can see any fleas fall off. And keep in mind that fleas can jump.

And don’t forget to wash your dog’s bedding and use a good flea powder on carpets throughout the house, especially in the areas where the dog sleeps and has it’s bed.

According to the Dog Owner”s Home Veterinary Handbook”, “Signs (of anemia) vary considerably, depending on the cause. Often they are overshadowed by the signs of a chronic illness, of which anemia is but one of the associated symptoms. In general, anemic dogs lack appetite, lose weight, sleep a great deal and show generalized waekness. “

They go on to caution, “With severe anemia, heart murmurs are common. The pulse is rapid and so is the breathing rate. The dog may faint when overexerting. Most of these signs also occur with heart disease, and these two conditions might be easily confused.”

As always, your vet can make the final diagnosis.

Whether a newborn puppy is fed by his own mother or by his owner, he must eventually be taught to depend on something besides milk for his food. This learning process is called “weaning”, and represents the changing of a puppy’s diet from liquid to solid. At about three to four weeks of age, as soon as their eyes open and they are able to move about with some ease, most puppies will begin to experiment with the solid foods being fed to their mother. When this happens it is time to begin to teach the puppies to eat from the pan.

Instituting such an early feeding procedure accomplishes four important things. First, it allows you to feed the puppies a dog food that is more satisfactory for them than the food you are feeding their mother. Second, it speeds up the weaning process because the puppies will learn to eat solid food at an earlier age. Third, it begins the social interaction between the puppy and his owners. And finally, it allows you to reduce the mother’s intake of food at the same rate you increase that of her puppies. The latter prevents the mother from overeating as the early feeding of her pups promotes reduced lactation.

Weaning is a learning process in which the pups’ digestive system is trained to eat solid foods. Before the puppy is born, he is fed by his mother with pre-digested nutrients. When he is whelped the puppy drinks the mother’s milk. The mother’s milk contains some of the most digestible nutrients that a puppy can eat. At weaning the puppy’s digestive system must learn to handle each new food in turn, as it comes to him. Similar to all learning processes, the weaning process cannot be taught faster than the puppy’s ability to learn.

In formulating the dog nutrition diet, the ingredients that make up the food fed to a puppy that is starting to wean must be highly digestible and non-irritating. An excellent weaning diet can be made easily by preparing slurry using a specialized dietary animal foods designed to be fed to patients with gastro-intestinal disorders, mixed into equal parts of the mother’s milk substitutes. “Half and half” coffee cream can also be used. High-quality ration-type commercial foods also make adequate solid foods to mix with the liquid part of the diet. In all cases, ¼ to ½ tablespoonful of grated, raw liver should be added to each can of food just before it is mixed. The slurry can be either beaten with a fork or mixed in a blender.

For larger breeds, it may be more practical to use the higher quality, expanded dry foods in combination with the canned foods to blend with the liquids. Addition of dry dog foods may also help these larger, faster-growing puppies to get sufficient nutrients in the quantity of food they are able to consume in. Whatever the mixture used, the quantity of milk substitute in it is gradually reduced, so that when the puppy is about six or seven weeks old, he is only eating pure, solid dog food.

For pet lovers who want to give the best of care and love to their pet dogs or cats, simple things such as choosing a cat or dog food bowl or a water bowl can become quite an arduous task. This is because they want to give the best for their pets. Safety, comfort, and convenience should come first when choosing a bowl for your pet. There are many types of bowls when to design and material. The most common materials are plastic, stainless steel, and ceramics. A plastic bowl is quite a good choice if sturdiness is one of your criteria. Similarly if you are looking for ease of cleaning, ceramics and stainless steel bowls make for perfect choice.

Again there are so many designs available for your pet’s food and water bowl. Some bowls are shallow while some are deep. Some are elevated. There are also colorful bowls and if you want, you can even print your pet’s image on the bowl. Also printing your pet’s name on the bowl will be fun. Again, different shapes and sizes of pet bowls are available in the market. Elevated designs are good for serving food and water if your pet dog is quite old and has problem in stooping. Again there are dog water bowls with wide openings which give easy access to large-headed dogs.

If you have finally decided to buy the right bowl for your pet, the next thing that confronts you is where to look out these bowls.

Hills Prescription Diet dog food has been around for several years. As you might now, many “specialty” dog foods come and go. So why has Hills Prescription Diet continued to be popular? Simply because it is not a specialty “fad” dog food. Hills Prescription Diet dog food was designed by veterinarians to help dogs with aliments, medical conditions and so forth. The nutritional value and content that goes into each and every can and bag of their dog food is made with a particular aliment in mind as well as the nutritional needs of an ill dog.

For example, Hills Prescription Diet k/d was designed to improve kidney health of a dog. The formula that makes this particular dog food caters specifically to reestablishing kidney health and improving the overall health of a dog. A lot of time and research goes into each formula before it is considered for treating the dog.

It is important, as a dog owner, that you know and understand the importance of healthy kidney function. The kidneys are designed to be filters, if you will. They filter out the waste within the dog’s blood. They also help to keep the balance of minerals and fluid where they should be. Unfortunately, if kidney issues go unnoticed and untreated they can cause damage that can not be reversed.

You might be wondering why the food you feed your dog matters. Well, it does, it is very important that your dog is getting the precise nutrition it needs, especially while he/she is having problems with their kidneys. Hills Prescription Diet k/d was designed to help your dog get well balanced meals on a regular basis while fighting off infection in the kidneys.

Here are some of the changes that were made to make Hills Prescription Diet k/d dog food beneficial for kidney health: An increase in Omega 3 fatty acids: which assists in smooth flowing blood to the kidneys, a reduction of phosphorus: which assists in maintaining kidney health, antioxidants were included into the recipe: which gives the immune system a boost to fight off germs etc., protein is reduced: this allows the kidneys to work less, the sodium was also reduced; this keeps the dog’s blood pressure at a normal rate, finally, they included a larger amount of B-complex to replenish lost vitamins due to urination.

These modifications were determined to be the best way to treat kidney health. If you are considering going with another brand of food for your dog’s kidney health, read the label. Hills Prescription Diet k/d dog food will help your dog become healthy with nutrition as a primary treatment. Discuss the possibilities of changing your dog food to Hills Prescription Diet k/d with your veterinarian.

Follow the feeding instructions that are given to you by your veterinarian, if it is determined that Hills Prescription Diet k/d
